[list standard application requirements, including the ERAS 2023 MyERAS application here]

For the 2023 ERAS® cycle, our program will be collecting and reviewing data from applicants' supplemental ERAS applications. Completion of the standard MyERAS application is a requirement; completion of the supplemental ERAS application is optional.

In its second year of use, the supplemental ERAS application is designed to help applicants share more information about themselves and assist our program in finding applicants that fit our program's setting and mission. There is no cost to applicants and participation is optional.

The supplemental ERAS application includes:
  • geographic preferences (by division and by urban or rural setting);
  • information about an applicant's most meaningful experiences and other impactful life events, if applicable; and
  • program signals.

The supplemental ERAS application will be delivered via email to applicants with a unique URL that is separate from the MyERAS application and must be completed between August 1 and September 16, 2022.

Best Practices and Appropriate Use for Supplemental ERAS Application Information:

Do:

  • Consider information from applicants’ responses in the supplemental ERAS application alongside other application information in the PDWS to get a more complete picture of the applicant and their accomplishments
  • Use preference signals and geographic preferences as "plus factors"

Don't:

  • Screen out applicants who did not submit a supplemental application at all
  • Overinterpret missing responses to questions
  • Assume that 5 experiences represent the breadth of applicants' experiences or a full list of publications and presentations
  • Overweigh preferences when deciding who to invite for interview
  • Use preference signals and geographic preferences after the interview offer phase of application review
  • Disclose the identification of an applicant who has sent your program a signal or communicated a preference for your region
  • Ask an applicant whether they are participating in signaling and to which programs they have sent signals or for which regions they have communicated a preference*
  • Disclose the number of signals your program has received, except for research and evaluation purposes

Terms and Conditions for Use of the Supplemental ERAS Application within the Electronic Residency Application Service:

Programs in the specialties found here: https://connect.aamc.org/resourcelibraries/suppapp are eligible to receive some or all information collected in the Supplemental ERAS application. By using the Supplemental ERAS Application, You, a Program Director, a Designated Institutional Official (DIO), or other Training Program User, agree to the following additional Terms and Conditions:

(1) Sign up. If you are the DIO (or designee), or Training Program Director, you must alert ERAS if your program will be receiving information from the Supplemental ERAS Application by indicating your participation status in EAM by July 1, 2022.

(2) Applicant Participation is Voluntary. Not all applicants will elect to participate in the Supplemental ERAS Application. Programs should not assume that the absence of supplemental ERAS information from an applicant indicates the applicant is not interested in their program.

(3) Geographic Preference and Program Signaling Confidentiality. You will know if an applicant has a geographic preference for your division or sent a program signal to your program. You will not know if an applicant has opted out of providing a geographic preference or program signaling or if they indicated a preference for another division or program. The following actions are prohibited:

i. Disclosing the identity of an applicant who has indicated a geographic preference for your division and/or has sent your program a signal.
ii. Asking an applicant whether they participated in the geographic preference section, program signaling, which divisions they preferred, and/or to which programs they sent signals.
iii. To prevent undue pressure on applicants or unhelpful comparisons between programs, the AAMC prohibits programs from disclosing the number of geographic preferences and/or the number program signals received.
iv. Geographic preference and program signal information is appropriate for use in pre-interview screening only. It should not be used when creating or finalizing the program’s rank order list or the preference list created during SOAP.

(4) Violation of Geographic Preference and Program Signaling Confidentiality Rules. A program who is found to have violated the Geographic Preference and Program Signaling Confidentiality Rules will be considered to have violated this Agreement, and in addition to other consequences may jeopardize their ability to participate in future cycles.
